Best Time to Visit the Agafay Desert Near Marrakech

Short answer: April, May, September, and October are the sweet spot for visiting the Agafay desert, with pleasant daytime temperatures and cool, comfortable evenings for the sunset camel rides and dinners most tours are built around. Summer is not a dealbreaker, but it changes what your day should look like. Here's how each season actually plays out on the plateau.

Spring (March-May): The Best All-Rounder

Marrakech's daytime highs climb gently through spring, from around 23°C in March to 28°C in May, with mild, comfortable evenings. This is close to ideal for Agafay: warm enough to enjoy the outdoors all afternoon, cool enough that the evening camel ride and dinner under the stars is genuinely pleasant rather than something to endure. It's also wildflower season on parts of the plateau after winter rains, which adds some green to the usual ochre-and-rust palette.

Summer (June-August): Plan Around the Heat, Not Against It

This is Marrakech's hottest stretch, with July averaging around 36°C by day, sometimes higher on the plateau itself where there's little shade. Summer isn't a reason to skip Agafay — it's a reason to time your visit for late afternoon and evening rather than midday. Most desert camps and tour operators, including ours, schedule the camel trek and quad activities for the hours around sunset specifically because of this: by 6-7pm the worst of the heat has passed, and the golden-hour light over the rocky plateau is arguably at its best this time of year. Bring water, a hat, and sun protection regardless of when you go.

Autumn (September-November): The Quiet Favorite

Autumn mirrors spring closely — daytime highs easing down from around 31°C in September to the low-20s by November — with the added benefit of being just past the peak summer crowds. Many repeat visitors and locals consider September and October the single best window: warm days, cool nights, and clear air for Atlas Mountain views from the plateau.

Winter (December-February): Cold Nights, Clear Days

Winter days in Marrakech are mild, averaging around 19-20°C, but nights drop sharply — January lows average close to 5°C, and it's noticeably colder out on the open plateau after dark than in the city. A winter evening desert trip is completely doable and often stunningly clear, but layer up: a warm jacket for the evening camel ride and dinner is not optional, it's essential.

Quick Reference: What to Expect by Month

  • Dec-Feb: Mild days (~19-20°C), cold nights (as low as 5°C). Bring a warm layer.
  • Mar-May: Warm days (23-28°C), mild evenings. The most comfortable stretch overall.
  • Jun-Aug: Hot days (up to 36°C+). Go for sunset, not midday.
  • Sep-Nov: Warm days easing to mild (31°C down to low 20s), cool evenings, clear skies.
